Recursive processing, integration, and how clarity arrives

If you’ve ever felt like your thinking doesn’t move at the pace the world seems to expect, this may resonate. Not because you lack clarity, but because your clarity arrives all at once, after a process the world doesn’t always recognize.
Many of us were taught to treat speed as intelligence and immediacy as confidence, rewarding fast answers and instant certainty over depth. We were taught to think in straight lines, building understanding brick by brick. But for some of us, understanding doesn’t arrive in parts.
It arrives as a gestalt, a fused, heavy, and unformed whole. It can feel present before I know what to do with it, like something already true that hasn’t found its words yet.
Despite how consistently the world expects otherwise, I don’t think in straight lines. I think in loops.
When I encounter something meaningful, I don’t just take in a list of facts. I take in a scene, a mass of data, emotion, history, and sensory context, all frozen together. Because this mass is so complex, I can’t process it linearly. I have to circle it.
This is recursive processing, a way of making sense that reaches accuracy through return rather than speed. I take the whole chunk and roll it, noticing where the edges are shaggy, where the internal connections are weak, and where the feeling of the thing doesn’t yet match the data of the thing. Sometimes those returns happen quickly. Sometimes they pause for days or months.
These pauses aren’t breaks from the process. They are the time required for the mass to settle and for the layers to bond. Those pauses are often interrupted by urgency, expectations, or the pressure to respond before the form is ready. From the outside, this can look like indecision or overthinking, even when the process is moving exactly as it needs to.
Alongside this, I process integratively. Facts don’t land on their own. They arrive with emotion, memory, context, and meaning attached. Understanding isn’t just cognitive for me. What I know and what I feel arrive together, and separating them makes less sense than holding them side by side. When I’m asked to separate them anyway, clarity doesn’t improve. It destabilizes.
The easiest way I’ve found to describe this is through metaphor. My thinking isn’t like rolling a ball downhill to see how fast it can go. It’s more like rolling a snowball along a winding path. But I didn’t start with a single flake. I started with a heavy, unformed mound of snow.
Each pass along the path adds a thin layer of compression. The goal isn’t speed. It’s shape and density. Recursive processing is the act of turning the snowball so it compresses evenly. Integrative processing is what keeps the emotion and the context frozen inside the mass, giving it weight and coherence.
If you rush this process, or if you try to strip away the emotional snow to get to a factual core, you don’t get a better result. You get a lopsided shape that breaks the moment you try to use it. This is often invisible until the moment something real depends on it.
When the snowball finally holds its shape, it is solid. It doesn’t collapse under pressure because every inch of it has been stress-tested through return.
But this solidity isn’t a static event; it’s a cumulative one. Each gestalt resolves as its own complete form. When something settles, it has edges, coherence, and internal logic. But it doesn’t sit in isolation. Once formed, it becomes part of a larger landscape that has been building over the course of my life. Each completed understanding adds weight to what comes next. The snowball doesn’t reset with every new experience. Earlier understandings quietly shape how new ones land, even when I’m not consciously thinking about them.
Because so much of this work happens beneath the surface, it is easily misunderstood by those watching from the outside. In action, this can look like rumination, especially if it carries emotional weight. But there is a somatic difference. Rumination is a closed loop that tightens and depletes. Recursive processing is a spiral, effortful and sometimes exhausting, but oriented toward coherence. Even when it’s slow, it carries a sense of movement that my body recognizes.
This intensity eventually has to go somewhere, and for me, it usually moves through the body. This is often where tears show up, regardless of whether I’m sad. They’re not always a sign that something is wrong. They’re part of how emotion moves through the system as meaning organizes itself. For me, tears are a response to intensity, integration, and truth taking shape, not just grief.
If tears are the release of the internal pressure, processing out loud is the sound of the snow being worked into form. When I process out loud, I’m often in the shaping phase. I’m trying to describe the snowball while it is still shaggy and unformed. In that state, repetition is part of smoothing a specific edge. Extra context appears because it’s fused to the fact itself. Once clarity settles, I sometimes realize that what I shared mid-process belonged to an unfinished phase of understanding, not to what ultimately remained.
I may also be easily jarred because my working memory is saturated with the weight of the whole. An interruption can feel like someone kicking the snowball while the snow is still loose. What follows often isn’t anger so much as disorientation, the sense of having to rebuild momentum from scratch.
Then, often suddenly, the shape resolves. The gestalt settles. But even a finished snowball is initially vulnerable. Just as snow needs time for the layers to bond before it can support a heavy load, the system requires a period of low energy to stabilize. If new snow is piled onto the form the moment it settles, it doesn’t just add to the weight; it risks a structural collapse. The clarity needs time to become solid.
The only time I don’t require this stabilization is when the ground is already frozen and the path is packed down. I used to think my natural aptitude for math was the fast part of my brain. Now I see that math was simply a domain where the frameworks were already stable. The rules were clear. The symbols behaved reliably. The loop completed so quickly it felt like immediacy.
That won’t be math for everyone. Many autistic people find that same sense of clarity and speed in language, art, systems, or pattern-rich interests that never show up on a report card.
However, life and relationships are not like math. They don’t offer stable rules or consistent symbols. They are meaning-dense and context-dependent, shaped by history, subtle cues, and the fact that another person is continually responding and adapting. Understanding in these domains takes time because they require room to settle, and modern life rarely provides it.
This is where the looping matters most, in domains where meaning has to hold under real use. Truth doesn’t reveal itself all at once. It has to be rolled, tested, and allowed to settle before it can hold. Rushing that process doesn’t make it clearer. It makes it fragile.
In these shifting landscapes, we are often forced to rely on the weight of what has already frozen solid. What often gets called intuition or gut feeling is not separate from this process. It’s what recognition feels like when meaning has already integrated, even if I can’t yet explain how I know. For a long time, I was taught to distrust that signal, to treat it as unreliable unless I could immediately justify it with externally verifiable facts. But for me, that early sense is often the most accurate information I have. It isn’t opposed to reason. It’s the result of reasoning that has already finished its work below the surface.
That doesn’t mean I’m incapable of deciding something quickly. When I do, it’s usually because the meaning is already present, formed earlier and integrated fully into the larger framework I carry with me. What looks like speed is often recognition. And because what’s there is solid, it can also be revised later without collapsing everything built on top of it.
That’s the difference between decisiveness and rigidity. One is possible because the work has been done. The other is brittle because it hasn’t.
But we must be careful not to mistake efficiency for invulnerability. Even when the snowball forms quickly because the path is familiar, the energy spent is real. If those low periods are not honored, the recovery debt doesn’t disappear. It accumulates.
If you’ve been told you’re too much, too slow, or overthinking, consider that the issue may not be your mind at all. You may be working with material that requires density and time, building something meant to last, something capable of change without losing its integrity.
A Closing Note
I’m writing from my current understanding. Some parts may remain imprecise, not because they’re wrong, but because further integration requires time and conditions that aren’t always available.
I recognized myself in other people’s writing long before I could explain myself this way. Those pieces didn’t give me answers so much as mirrors. They let me see my own shape more clearly than I had before.
Two writers, in particular, helped that recognition land: Sher Griffin and Jaime Hoerricks, PhD. Their work gave language to things I was already sensing but couldn’t yet articulate. Reading them didn’t resolve anything for me. It slowed me down enough to notice what was already happening.
This post exists in that same spirit.
